West Mersea man charged with rape and strangulation of woman

A man has been charged with the rape, strangulation and attempted grievous bodily harm of a woman.
Essex Police said an attack on Mersea Island was reported on Wednesday and a 30-year-old man was arrested.
He appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court and was remanded in custody ahead of a crown court appearance on 28 March.
Det Ch Insp Nathan Hutchinson called it a "significant step forward in the investigation".
He said: "Our specialist teams work determinedly to tackle violence against women and girls in all its forms."
