Remembrance mural vandalised with spray paint for second time

The mural was damaged again over the weekend with silver spray paint

A remembrance mural has become the target of "mindless vandalism" for a second time.

Spray paint was used between Monday and Tuesday last week to deface the artwork situated on Witham's river walk.

The initial incident was reported to Essex Police, but silver spray paint was then used at the weekend to create further damage.

A spokesperson from Witham Town Council said it was "just mindless vandalism". Police have been contacted for comment.

The remembrance mural was attacked twice in the space of a few days

"I would not dignify them by calling them 'street artists' or 'graffiti artists'," said the council spokesperson.

"Like most of our wonderful community, I am appalled by their behaviour."

The mural was created in 2015 with the help of local school children

The mural was made in 2015 with the help of pupils from a local primary school and has been displayed on an Environment Agency gauge station.

It was previously vandalised in November 2021 when a swastika was painted on it.
