Bishop of Gloucester consecrates cathedral's new altar

A new altar has been consecrated by the Bishop of Gloucester at the city's cathedral.

The Right Reverend Michael Perham consecrated the altar, part of a new suite of furniture, in a service on Sunday.

A dais has already been installed and a lectern and choir stalls will be next.

The cathedral was affected by the recession in 2009, but was helped by a £355,000 legacy from an anonymous benefactor.

The Acting Dean of Gloucester Cathedral, Canon Neil Heavisides, said: "Anything new takes some time to get used to, but already a number of people have commented how attractive the new altar is.

"Barnaby Scott was the main designer and we are extraordinarily grateful for the way he's spent so much time in considering the wood and the place in which it's set."
