Project to link Gloucester city and docks in last stage

The project aims to revitalise the city centre by linking it to the docks

The final stage of a project to link Gloucester city centre with the docks has started.

Roads are being resurfaced, which will cause some disruption to traffic until 16 March, and then artworks will be installed.

The project has been delayed by the discovery of ancient skeletons, a gravestone and a Roman wall, as well as the cold weather before Christmas.

The county council hopes the final artwork will be installed in early May.

Frank Heggs, the council's principal engineer, said: "This is the last major disruptive part of the works.

"We've had delays upon delays. We've found bodies, we've found gravestones, we've come across a Roman wall, and every time you come across an archaeological find you have to stop work.

"It's right that we should do so because we we need to investigate those things."

Ladybellegate Street will be closed at its junction with Commercial Road until the end of the week, but the street will be accessible from the north.

Three-way traffic lights will be in place while work concentrates on the Southgate Street and Parliament Street junction.

The aim of the project is to revitalise the city centre by linking it with Gloucester Quays development.
