Energy-efficient lights introduced in Gloucestershire

Energy-efficient street lights are to be introduced in Gloucestershire.

A county council spokesman said the new light emitting diode (LED) lighting would save money, last longer and improve the quality of lighting.

The change comes after a trial involving 65 lights in Dursley, which the authority said was "very successful".

Work to replace 200 to 250 street lights is due to start on Monday in Cheltenham.

The council spokesman said the work will take three weeks to complete.

The authority says it is aiming to convert about 2,000 lights in 2011-12.
