The University of Gloucestershire has sold off half its Pittville Campus in Cheltenham to a housing developer.

The three-hectare site, which was vacated over the summer, will be partly retained for student accommodation but the rest is earmarked for private use.

Developer Charles Church is expected to submit a planning application for residential housing in partnership with the university.

The closure of the campus was announced in 2009 as a cost-cutting measure.

Media, art and design teaching facilities have been relocated leaving the site - on the corner of New Barn Lane and Albert Road in Cheltenham - empty.

Nigel Wichall, the University's estates director, said they would be "arranging a series of public consultation events over the coming months".
