Lydney homes and factories protected by new flood defence

Work on a new flood defence scheme to protect 11 houses and two factories in Gloucestershire has been completed.

A flood wall and embankment has been constructed in Lydney, at a cost of £720,000, using locally sourced clay.

The Environment Agency said the project in the Station Road and Mead Lane area would reduce the risk of river flooding to 1% in any given year.

Local flooding has occurred after high tides on the River Severn caused water to back up the Rivers Lyd and Cut.

John Thurston, chairman of Watts Group which has properties in the area, said an increase in concerns with flooding had deterred many tenants from moving into the area.
