Gloucestershire flood warnings issued by Environment Agency

Three flood warnings remain for the River Severn in Gloucestershire, the Environment Agency has said.

It affects the Severn at Deerhurst, Apperley and Ashleworth. Earlier flood warnings for stretches of the Frome near Stroud have now been removed.

Flood alerts are also in place for the rivers Wye and Leadon in the county.

A spokesman said water levels were expected to peak early on Wednesday, but the expected rise in river levels for Tewkesbury was "not unusual".

'System will cope'

The area has experienced similar water levels nine times in the past five years, the agency said.

Dave Throup, of the agency, said: "As long we don't get a bag more rain then the system will cope. Yes, the flood plains will fill up but that's what they are there for.

"No two floods are the same - most of the flood water will come from the Avon catchments rather than further up from Shrewsbury.

"But we're expecting levels to go up by eight to 12 inches (20-30 cm) by about this time tomorrow, but that's certainly manageable.

"The rivers have responded very quickly in the Stroud area and with the rain now stopping we don't expect the situation to get any worse."
