Javelin Park waste incinerator recommended for approval

Gloucestershire County Council has recommended that planning permission be granted.

A controversial £500m scheme for a waste incinerator in Gloucestershire has been recommended for approval by the council.

The incinerator, at Javelin Park near Haresfield, has already been given a draft permit by the Environment Agency.

The new facility will require planning permission and a full environmental permit before it can be built.

Recommendations for the scheme will be presented to a planning meeting on 21 March.

Gloucestershire County Council has already signed a 25-year contract with Urbaser Balfour Beatty to build a waste incinerator on a site near junction 12 of the M5.

Plans to build the incinerator have attracted opposition from more than 1,000 people.

Objections include its size, location, cost, environmental impact and potential health implications.

Those in favour of the development say it is needed to deal with the thousands of tonnes of household waste generated in the county each year.

The agenda papers have been published online ahead of the planning meeting later this month when councillors will vote on whether to approve the plans.
