Marine conservationists have been keeping watch of a dolphin that has been spotted along the River Severn.

The creature was first seen a week ago during the high tides between Stonebench and Elmore Lane West by people in the local area.

Julia Cable, from British Divers Marine Life Rescue, said: "It's stayed in one area and we are observing it, the dolphin seems to be quite healthy."

She added it was "unusual" to see a bottle-nosed dolphin in the river.

Concerns have been raised by people locally as the animal keeps swimming back up the river every day.

The conservation group said it was against the law to capture and move dolphins unless they beach on the river banks.

Ms Cable added she would be concerned if it swam further upriver to the weir, saying it would make it harder for the dolphin to escape due to the stronger currents.

In 2009, a porpoise - first thought to be a dolphin - died after getting stranded on Maisemore Weir in the River Severn.
