Winning design chosen for new Forest Green Rovers ground

The winning design has been selected for a proposed 5,000-seat stadium for Forest Green Rovers.

Almost 50 designs from architects from around the world were submitted as part of a competition for the football club's new ground near Stroud.

Club chairman Dale Vince said the winning design from Zaha Hadid will be "entirely made of wood".

The stadium is to be the centrepiece of a £100m sports and green technology business park proposal next to the M5.

In July, the list of designs was whittled down to two firms, Zaha Hadid Architects, responsible for the 2012 London Olympic Aquatic Centre, and Glenn Howells Architects, which designed Gloucester Services on the M5.

Forest Green Rovers were also impressed by Glenn Howells Architects' vision for the stadium

"Glenn Howells also produced an exceptional design - and they impressed us as much as their design did actually. As a result, we're going to work with them on some future projects," Mr Vince added.

A planning application was submitted for the development in January, but is not due to be looked at by council planners until later this year.

National League side Forest Green Rovers currently play in Nailsworth.
