A man who murdered his neighbour has been sentenced to a hospital order under the mental health act.

Liam Hopson had been due to stand trial at Bristol Crown Court but a judge ruled he was unfit to enter a plea, following mental health assessments.

A jury found that Hopson had killed Mohammed Nadeem at a property in Barton, Gloucester, on 1 July 2022.

Hopson was also found to have caused grievous bodily harm with intent relating to an incident in April 2022.

The grievous bodily harm with intent charge relates to 28 April 2022 when Hopson attacked a work colleague with a hammer.

After a judge ruled the 35-year-old, formerly of Barton Street, Gloucester, was unfit to stand trial, a jury was asked to determine whether Hopson had committed both acts.

The jury found he had.

Hopson, who now resides at a secure psychiatric hospital, was given a hospital order and a section 41 restriction order to protect the public from serious harm.

Any decision to discharge him from hospital must be made by the Ministry of Justice.
