A grandmother says starring in the new series of a survival television show took her to places that were "difficult to deal with".

Sabrina Pace-Humphreys, 45, from Stroud was picked to take part on the latest series of the BBC's Survivor UK.

She was one of 18 contestants marooned at a tropical location and divided into two tribes.

Ms Pace-Humphreys said the experience was "emotionally and physically draining."

"It was so difficult but it was also so much fun. Strangers became friends, I put myself in [situations] I would never put myself in" she told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

Hosted by Joel Dommett, the show tests contestants physical and psychological limits as players compete to outwit, outplay and outlast their rivals to be crowned the Sole Survivor.

Ms Pace-Humphreys is a mum of four, grandmother of three, ultra-marathon runner, author and charity fundraiser.

"It took me to places that were really quite difficult to deal with. Especially being a mum and a grandmother and being so cut off from everything I know and love."

Ms Pace-Humphreys said she was "intrigued" by the concept of the show

The 45-year-old said she chose to take part in the series for another "fun life experience".

She said she was also intrigued by the concept of the challenge and being in a tribe with strangers.

"I love the concept of stripping it totally back. Not being able to be contacted, because you're not allowed any kind of digital device in there, you really are cut off.

Although Ms Pace-Humphreys is used to pushing her body to the limits, she said the programme was "madness" and "emotionally and physically draining."

"For me, the mental emotional side far outweighed the physical," she said.

"In normal life, I [physically] do really hard things. But for me it was the mental side, the emotional side.

"For me, as a woman, a woman of colour, a mum and gran, that was hard."

Survivor will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn.
