The signs in Cheltenham are to be changed, the council said

Residents in Cheltenham have asked for clarity over parking zone signs that are incorrect.

Zone 15 came into operation in December, covering streets including Hewlett Road and London Road.

Signs say non-permit holders "cannot return to zone 15" after using a limited wait bay when they should read "cannot return to the same bay".

Gloucestershire County Council said: "Signage in the area will be amended to reflect this".

Zone 15 was set up to discourage commuters from parking in residential areas and make it easier for residents to park outside of their homes.

Tom Davis wanted clarity on the whole parking scheme

Fairview resident, Tom Davis, wants more clarity: "It's been an interesting experience since the consultation, I think confusion is probably the buzz word of the day.

"It has had some positives, as it's kept local shoppers out who normally park here and walk into town.

"I guess the signs mean no return to Zone 15, which is about 15% of Cheltenham, so it doesn't make sense.

"I would welcome clarity on the whole thing."

John Carroll claimed the scheme has been fairly shambolic

Another resident, John Carroll, can now park more easily outside his home.

"I'm one of the few people who's been fairly in favour of the parking scheme, but it has been shambolic, the way it has come in and the signs that have changed," he said.

"I think the sign actually means no return to the road, but sometimes you have to go with what's in writing.

"On my road parking has become a lot easier."

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council said: "After using a limited wait bay, motorists cannot return to the same bay but can park elsewhere in Zone 15.

"Signage in the area will be amended to reflect this as clearly as possible.

"The council is committed to undertaking a full review of the scheme in the Autumn and we would value the community contributing to the public consultation."
