The 13,400 sqm car park will be replaced by a "much needed" housing complex

A town centre car park may be replaced with more than 150 new homes.

Wavensmere Homes Limited has submitted a proposal to develop the North Place car park to Cheltenham Borough Council.

Plans for the 13,400 sqm site include a four-storey apartment block and three-storey townhouses, along with parking and green spaces.

Consultants representing the developer say the scheme will provide a "mix of attainable homes" for a "broad socio-economic range" of people.

The site has been used primarily as a surface-level car park for many years, but Wavensmere Homes, in collaboration with BBS Capital, says it wants to develop a "thriving community" there.

Council leader Rowena Hay has welcomed the news that plans have been submitted for the site.

"I would like to thank BBS and Wavensmere Homes for working collaboratively with this administration to bring the site forward with much needed housing," she said.

Ben Clarke, technical director of Wavensmere Homes, said the development would "transform an unattractive blot on Cheltenham's townscape".

"We are very pleased to have lodged this significant planning application," he said.

"Arkle Court is designed to complement the range of quality restaurants and shops at The Brewery Quarter and will continue the renaissance of the St Paul's area."

Borough Council planners are expected to make a decision on the proposals by 25 May.
