PCSO Wendy Eaglestone called for pet owners to be on their guard
A family cat was killed when it became trapped in an illegal snare in Hampshire.
Police are investigating after three traps were found in the cricket ground area of Whitchurch on Wednesday.
The first trap caught the cat which later died, while the others where found by a family walking their dog.
Snares are used to trap animals such as rabbits and foxes which are perceived to be pests, but there is the risk of other animals also being caught.
Officers have stepped up patrols in the area.
Police community support officer Wendy Eaglestone said: "This is a rare but serious incident and I'd like to ask other dog walkers and pet owners to be aware of this for the safety of their pets and other wildlife.
"If you have any information about who is responsible for placing these snares, please get in touch."
