Hampshire police recruit 4x4 drivers for winter weather

Owners of four wheel drive vehicles are being asked to volunteer to help Hampshire's emergency services in the event of extreme weather conditions.

Hampshire police have set up the 4x4 Volunteers scheme to call on owners for tasks including driving police officers and emergency resources around.

Vetted volunteers need a clean driving licence and will receive training.

Sgt Phil Lamb said: "There has never been a better time to step up and help your community to help itself".

The scheme has been set up with Hampshire Fire and Rescue and the county council.

Sgt Lamb said: "If we have another winter like last year, with a repeat of the extreme ice and snow conditions, our resources will be severely stretched, and that is when drivers will be put to good use helping out those in need and transporting vulnerable members of our community."
