Police are holding a man on suspicion of attempted murder and are looking for a second suspect following a shooting in Southampton.

A 27-year-old man was shot in the back of the leg and later found by officers in a Tesco store in Bitterne on Sunday.

The man is thought to have been shot near an address in Vanguard Road at about 19:00 GMT.

Police are also searching for a handgun in connection with the incident.

Hampshire Constabulary said the 25-year-old Southampton man in custody and the victim were known to each other but a motive had not been established.

The victim has spoken to police. His injuries are described as "non-life-threatening".

In a statement, Hampshire Constabulary said they wanted to reassure people there was "no evidence to suggest a wider risk to public safety".

A large area of Vanguard Road in Townhill Park has been cordoned off while experts carry out a detailed examination.
