Parts of some roads on the Isle of Wight have been closed after their surfaces melted in the hot weather.

About 7km (4.3 miles) of roads on the island are thought to be affected as surface temperatures reached 50c.

The same stretches of road melted during April's hot spell after it was resurfaced by contractors Kiely Brothers.

The firm has agreed to meet the cost of remedial work and the roads were reopened overnight.

A section of road from Blackwater to Merstone was shut on Tuesday and diversions were put in place while smaller chippings were applied as a temporary measure.

Sally Perry, from VentnorBlog, a news website on the island, said she was shocked to see how much damage had been done to the road surface.

She added: "Large potholes have appeared along the busy stretch of road."

No one from the Kiely Brothers was available for comment.
