The exhibition began after the National Museum of the Royal Navy appealed to the public. Knitted items arrived from as far as the US, Australia, Netherlands and Abu-Dhabi.

More than 1,900 woollen sea creatures were sent in.

The idea for the artwork came from the museum's Jo Valentine and members of the Artstop art group. Ms Valentine found designs for knitted balaclavas worn by sailors serving on Arctic Convoy duty.

Sailors onboard HMS Victory also learnt how to knit and created pieces.
