Thirty six decorated rhino sculptures have been placed at locations around Southampton and surrounding areas as part of the Go! Rhinos project.

The fibreglass rhinos form an art trail to mark the 40th anniversary of Marwell Wildlife and raise awareness of its conservation work.

They have been placed in locations around the city centre, including Guildhall Square, the Bargate and Bugle Street

With a collective weight of 20 tonnes, the rhinos were moved into position using eight vehicles.

The rhinos will be auctioned in the autumn to raise money for Marwell Wildlife, Wessex Heartbeat and The Rose Road Association.

Local artists, school and community groups have decorated the rhinos.

Visitors can use a map or smartphone app to visit the locations of all the rhinos.

German tourist Heinz Steinhauer outside St Michael's Church said: "I really like them, I've already seen the one at the Bargate - it really adds something to the city".

The project aims to raise awareness of the plight of rhinos in the wild.

Kirstie Mathieson, Go! Rhinos project manager said: “Go! Rhinos has brought together the whole community and not only highlights the plight of rhinos in the wild but boosts the city’s economy and provides everyone with a great day out."

Electronics students at the University of Southampton fitted rhino Erica with her own wi-fi network and Twitter feed.
