The 2014 New Forest Show has opened at New Park, near Brockenhurst, with thousands of animals - from cows to cockerels - on show.

The theme of this year's show was "hands on" and visitors had the chance to get close to the animals and try out activities.

More than 900 sheep and 300 cattle were entered in the show. There were also more than 2,300 entries in the horse section, which included 180 classes.

Demonstrations of traditional crafts included spinning, weaving, woodcraft and candle making.

The Countryside arena featured traditional country pursuits, including ferret racing, terrier racing and a parade of hunting hounds.

The food hall was busy with visitors trying out fresh locally-made produce, including local wines and honey produced in the forest.

Vintage and classic tractors, lovingly restored by their owners, received rounds of applause as they paraded in the Hoburne Ring.

Giant cabbages as wide as dustbin lids and metre-long leeks and parsnips were the talk of the vegetable show.

The annual three-day show takes place at the end of each July and attracts about 95,000 visitors. The first show was held in 1921 at Bartley Cross.

Vintage horse-drawn commercial vehicles were among the displays on the opening day.
