Portsmouth Pyramids leisure centre reopens after floods

A seafront leisure centre badly damaged by sea water in the winter storms has had a makeover of more than £1m.

About 50cm (19in) of water flooded Portsmouth's Pyramids in February, causing extensive damage to the swimming pool's plant room.

The water also severely damaged the building's fabric.

BH Live, which runs the centre, said the "major" repair costs were covered by insurance.

Meanwhile £897,000 was spent by the council on maintenance and repairs that had already been planned.

The company contributed £210,000 towards the renovations.

The plant room is now installed above flood level, and the damaged equipment replaced. Other replacements include the flat roof, glazed panels, paving, pipe work, and structures in the pool hall.

The leisure centre, owned by Portsmouth City Council, was taken over by BH Live last year after it came under threat of demolition by the authority which is having to make spending cuts.
