Military personnel helped remove belongings from homes along Undercliff Drive after the road collapsed

Access to homes on the Isle of Wight cut off by a landslide is to be reinstated after a temporary road was agreed by councillors.

Up to £500,000 will pay for a road to the west of Undercliff Drive which was destroyed in February's severe weather.

Isle of Wight Council said the work would "commence and be completed as soon as is possible".

Some residents attempted to build their own road last month, but it was shut by the council over safety concerns.

Undercliff Drive remains closed between Niton and St Lawrence with a four-mile detour in place leaving nine residents stranded.
