Plans for Harry Redknapp's land in Portsmouth refused

The site opposite South Parade Pier is empty

A development on waterfront land owned by Harry Redknapp has been rejected.

Plans for retirement flats and a supermarket in South Parade, Portsmouth, were submitted to the city council.

Councillors voted unanimously against the proposals for the site, where a building was destroyed by fire in 2011.

The application for the seven-storey building was submitted by McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd.

There was 100% fire damage to the building

According to the Land Registry, the site is owned by football manager Mr Redknapp's company Pierfront Developments Ltd.

A previous application was considered on 17 December and it was deferred by councillors so changes could be made to the design.

The land, opposite South Parade Pier, covers just under half a hectare along the seafront.

Savoy Court, an ornate Victorian building, previously occupied part of the area but was destroyed by fire on 9 August 2011.

The remaining structures on the site were demolished in 2009.

The proposal was for 32 retirement apartments, 66 assisted living apartments and communal areas, as well as retail space on the ground floor.
