Shanklin beach cliff lift bridge works begin

Work has started to install a temporary bridge so a cliff lift to an Isle of Wight beach can re-open.

The lift at Shanklin was closed in March by Isle of Wight Council over safety concerns about the metal footway at the top of the 150ft (45m) cliff.

The two-car lift is expected to start running again from 21 July.

The authority said work on a permanent replacement bridge and long-term repairs to the lift, costing £700,000, were expected to start in 2016.

Residents and visitors can either walk or take a bus to gain access to the esplanade from the town centre.
