Southampton arts complex costs rise by £2m

A new arts complex in Southampton needs another £2m to stop the project from stalling, a report has revealed, external.

The scheme, which includes apartments, shops, cafes and an arts space, is the flagship of the new Cultural Quarter around the Guildhall Square area.

But the city council has been faced with finding an extra £2m to cover higher than expected tender prices to fit out the complex.

Councillors will meet on 15 July to decide whether to release more funds.

The £18m construction cost is being funded by development partner Grosvenor, external while fit-out costs, which have now risen to £25m, are being funded by the council along other partners, including the University of Southampton.

The complex is due to open next year.
