A lorry which struck a bridge led to the closure of a stretch of the A31 westbound in Ringwood.

Police said it needed "extensive recovery" after it crashed and ended up on its side near the A338 junction on Wednesday at about 14:00 GMT.

One westbound lane remained open until about 17:00, when that was also shut.

The lorry, loaded with a container, was recovered overnight and the road reopened at about 03:00 GMT, police said.

No injuries have been reported to police. The eastbound side of the road was unaffected.

The eastbound side of the A31 will be reduced to one lane between the Verwood and Ringwood junctions from 20:00 on Thursday to 06:00 on Friday so a gantry can be removed.

The eastbound exit slip road at Ringwood will also be closed during the same times to lift out part of a barrier.

Work will also take place on the westbound A31 between Ringwood and Verwood from 20:00 on Friday until 06:00 on Saturday so a steel safety barrier can be installed.

Diversions will be in place during all of the work.
