Southampton: Bus, taxi and cycle-only zone comes in
- Published
Traffic restrictions allowing only buses, taxis and cyclists have come into force on a main route through Southampton City centre.
The new measure is in place on Portland Terrace between Spa Road, to the rear of Boots, and Castle Way Car Park.
It has been brought in by the city council to improve safety for pedestrians and journey times for buses crossing the city.
The council said it would use CCTV to monitor the restrictions.
The authority said vehicles would still be able to access parking along Portland Terrace from the north via Civic Centre Road/Havelock Road or from the south via Town Quay.
It comes ahead of a new bus hub with more bus stops, pedestrian crossings and bus waiting areas created at Albion Place car park along with e-scooter hire racks.
Work on the hub, which is expected to start in January, will also see the Castle Way car park turned into a park.
Both the Portland Terrace bus gate and Albion Place bus hub have been funded by the Department for Transport.
