The cost of crossing Southampton's Itchen Bridge could go up.

Southampton City Council wants to bring in a standard toll of £1 for cars, small vans and small 4x4s, scrapping the 80p off-peak toll.

It also wants to raise tolls for HGVs using the bridge, which links Woolston to the city centre, from £25 to £40.

Under the plans, the discount system for residents bearing the Southampton Residents Smart Cities Card could also be replaced by a 40p charge.

The toll increase is the second to be announced this year.

Councillor Eamonn Keogh, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "The Itchen Bridge is key in linking the communities of Southampton, but it also is an asset that requires ongoing maintenance which has to be funded by the council.

"All vehicle crossings place wear and tear on the bridge, and the toll should reflect this."

The council said a "significant programme of works to the bridge" costing up to £5m was being planned for 2024/25.

Details of the proposals can be found on a Southampton City Council, external web page where the public can also submit opinion.

The Itchen Bridge was opened in 1977, with the toll introduced to control traffic flows and secure the financial position of the structure.
