Isle of Wight Council said there were two successful prosecutions this month where bin crews and residents were put in danger

"Impatient" drivers are putting the lives of bin crews and other pedestrians at risk, a council has said.

Isle of Wight Council is urging motorists to show patience when following waste collection lorries.

The appeal comes after motorists were caught driving on pavements and in to oncoming traffic.

Collection lorries are fitted with a 360-degree camera, so dangerous incidents are captured.

The authority said crews reported an average of one incident every week.

It added there had been two successful prosecutions this month where bin crews and residents were put in danger.

A driver mounted the pavement to go around a bin lorry, narrowly missing a member of the bin crew, it added.

The motorist admitted to driving without due care and attention and was fined, and received three points.

'Dangerous actions'

A van also overtook a bin lorry and two cars, narrowly missing an on-coming car. The driver was fined and received six points, the council said.

Cabinet member for waste and recycling, Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, said: "The vast majority of road users drive responsibly.

"However, the dangerous actions of some impatient drivers needlessly risk the lives of collection crews, pedestrians and other road users."
