A cancer patient's family say it is the "best present" to get him home for Christmas after five months in hospital.

Vic Morrison, 77, arrived at Southampton General Hospital in August for a laryngectomy operation - the removal of the voice box.

But due to complications, his planned two-week stay was extended.

His wife Linda praised NHS staff and said the family could not wait to celebrate Christmas together.

The father-of-two and grandad-of-seven underwent two further operations and has had to have prolonged stays in the intensive care unit since the first operation.

A spokesperson for the hospital said Mr Morrison had "unwavering support" from his wife Linda.

The spokesperson added: "It is a day we feared we wouldn't see as he was very poorly and I didn't think he would be able to keep on fighting, but he proved us all wrong. He may have lost his voice but he hasn't lost his spirit.

"To have Vic home for Christmas is the best present any of us could have wished for."

Mrs Morrison, who thanked the team in charge of her husband's care, said: "They have all been amazing and we wouldn't be here, looking forward to another Christmas together, without them."
