The GMB union said the dispute was over a "toxic" work culture, wage errors and health and safety concerns.

Staff at an Asda superstore have voted to take part in the first-ever strike by store workers at the company, a union has said.

GMB members in Gosport, Hampshire, voted to walk out for two weeks from 12 January.

The union said the dispute was over a "toxic" work culture, wage errors and health and safety concerns.

Asda said the store would remain open and it was working to resolve the issues raised.

In a statement, it said: "We have established processes in place for colleagues to raise any concerns and are disappointed that the GMB has chosen this course of action.

"We are confident that we can keep disruption to a minimum."

The GMB said discussions with the firm had so far been "pointless and unproductive".

Regional organiser Nicola Nixon said: "To my knowledge, no ASDA store has been balloted for strike action before.

"If they don't want the store operations to grind to a halt in January, they need to meet us and actually negotiate with us, unlike the five previous times we have met."
