A gritter driver has been left shaken after his window was shot and shattered with a ball bearing as he drove on a salt run through a Hampshire village.

The driver was on the A325 going through Bucks Horn Oak shortly after midnight on Monday when the large metal ball was fired at the gritter's window.

Hampshire County Council said it came from a passing vehicle.

The authority said he was "thankfully unharmed" and a more serious incident avoided "due to his quick reactions".

The driver and his co-workers had been on a salt run on the road through the village near the Alice Holt Forest junction north of Bordon.

The council said the team returned to finish their work with another gritter. It added the shot-damaged gritter had been repaired and was back in use.

The authority has urged witnesses and anyone with information to contact Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.
