Clean air zones revoked after reduced pollution

The first clean air zone was implemented in Fareham in 2006

A town's reduced pollution levels mean it no longer legally requires its clean air zones, a council has announced.

Fareham Borough Council was ordered to impose two Air Quality Management Areas in 2006 and 2007 after high levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were detected.

In 2008, it published an action plan with 48 measures, including to improve public transport and encourage cycling.

Bid to save RAF Ibsley World War Two watch office

A bid to restore a derelict RAF watch office could be the only chance to save a piece of World War Two history, heritage campaigners have said.

The Landmark Trust has submitted plans to renovate the building at the site of RAF Ibsley, near Ringwood, to be used as holiday accommodation.

It was one of 12 airfields in the New Forest in the run up to D-Day in 1944.

A city centre train station has a new look after a mural was completed on one of its exterior walls.

Southampton Central Station's south-side stairs have been brightened up by the hand-painted artwork.

The work features highlights of the city and was developed by Poppy Ash as part of a project led by the University of Southampton's John Hansard Gallery.

Clean Air Night campaign shines light on wood burning

The first "Clean Air Night" looked to "shine a light" on the potential harms of burning wood.

The online campaign was supported by local authorities across Hampshire and organised by environmental charity Global Action Plan.

But a stove manufacturer on the Isle of Wight has disputed some of the claims made by the campaign.

Major roadworks planned for Southampton city centre

A main city centre road is to be made one-way while months of major roadworks are carried out.

An anti-clockwise system will be in place on Cumberland Place and Havelock Road in Southampton as work begins on the the northern inner ring road on 5 February.

The scheme will aim to create shorter journey times for drivers, more reliable buses and safer pedestrian crossings, the city council said.
