Derelict Isle of Wight hotel that hosted Jimi Hendrix to get revamp

A former hotel that once hosted rock legend Jimi Hendrix has been given the green light to undergo major changes.
The derelict and dilapidated Esplanade Hotel in Sandown will be transformed into an apartment block.
Plaza Property Developments submitted the plans in 2022, which have now been approved by the Isle of Wight Council.
In 1970, while the building was the Seagrove Hotel, Hendrix stayed the night before his famous Isle of Wight Festival set.
The new apartment block will feature 20 units, with 14 for residential use and the remaining six to be rented out as holiday lets.
The property development company bought the hotel in 2019, but has not attempted to run the hotel due to its poor condition and the need for extensive repairs.
The hotel has been closed for years with planning officers saying that its poor condition has had a significant adverse impact on the quality of that part of Sandown, and on the vibrancy and vitality of the High Street and Esplanade.
In their decision report, officers said given the building's current condition and the time the hotel has been vacant there would be benefits to the change.
They added there would be a significant positive impact for the Island's tourism economy as it would enhance the Victorian building, site and surrounding area.
As part of the changes, the four buildings which make up the hotel will be painted in pastel shades.
