Motorists have been warned to avoid the M27 in Hampshire after a crash involving multiple vehicles.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the collision near Junction 5 of the motorway's westbound carriageway at just after 12:30 GMT.

The road has been closed between Junction 5, near Southampton Airport, and Junction 7 for Hedge End while emergency services deal with the crash.

Hampshire police urged drivers to find alternative routes.

The crash saw one of the vehicles leave the carriageway and collide with the nearside gantry, according to National Highways.

Traffic caught within the westbound closure was turned around from the rear of the queue, the agency added.

Two lanes have also been closed on the eastbound carriageway.
