Portsmouth: Eastern Road remains closed for Southern Water repairs
- Published
A main commuter road into a port city remains closed as part of a £1m sewer repair project.
Drivers heading in and out of Portsmouth will be diverted away from Eastern Road as Southern Water conducts repairs to the problem-plagued route.
The water firm began re-lining work on the 300-metre-long (328 yds) sewer on 16 March and had planned to finish on Saturday.
It blamed "unforeseen circumstances" for the delay and hopes to reopen the road on Monday.businesses
The road has faced recurring issues of flooding and leaks caused by burst sewerage pipes.
In an update Southern Water said: "We apologise for the disruption this will cause residents, businesses and commuters.
"The work, which is part of a £1m solution, is being taken now to avoid more challenging times in the future."
Diversions are in place:
If approaching from the north or Farlington marshes, pedestrians and cyclists can use the roundabout to access the western cycle and footpath.
If approaching from the south, pedestrians and cyclists can cross the road to the west side of Eastern Road, at the traffic lights near Anchorage Road junction.
