Red Funnel said extended works were being carried out on Red Eagle

Sailings between Southampton and the Isle of Wight are being disrupted after an issue with a vehicle ferry.

Red Funnel said extended works were being carried out on its Red Eagle vessel.

Passengers set to sail on a car ferry to, or from, Southampton or Cowes have been warned of delays and cancellations.

The ferry firm has apologised to travellers for any inconvenience to their journeys.

A number of crossings departing from Southampton and Cowes throughout Monday were cancelled.

Red Funnel later tweeted that while Red Eagle undergoes repairs, Red Falcon would replace it for the 20:15 departure from Southampton and 21:45 departure from East Cowes.

Both sailings will depart 45 mins later than originally scheduled.

The ferry firm said the problem on the ferry was an issue with Red Eagle's aft voith unit - the propeller driven by the main engine.

It said work to fix it was expected to be completed in the next 24 hours.

The vehicle ferries, Red Falcon and Red Osprey, are both running.

Its high-speed passenger services across the Solent are also running as normal.
