The Bishop of Worcester praised the courage of the armed forces as Remembrance Sunday services were held across the country.
The Right Reverend Dr John Inge said the sacrifice of soldiers had "ensured our freedom".
He said it was important to honour their bravery by working towards a "deep and lasting peace".
The service at Worcester Cathedral included prayers for all members of the armed forces.
Candles were lit by representatives from a number of different faiths.
People killed in battle were also to be remembered at an evening Cathedral Requiem sung by the choir.
Meanwhile, in Hereford's St Peter's Square several hundred people gathered to remember those who had been killed in conflict.
