Memorial football match beats the weather in Pershore

A memorial football match has gone ahead despite a number of sporting events falling victim to the weather in Worcestershire and Herefordshire.

Around 500 people attended the game at Pershore Town Football Club which was played in memory of Scott Holden.

Scott, 16, died suddenly at his home on Christmas Eve last year.

The Met Office said much of both counties were on a yellow alert for icy conditions after 3cm (1.2in) of snow was recorded in Credenhill.

Scott was a player with Drakes Broughton Rangers under-16s.

Club secretary Ian Wilcox said Scott's former team-mates beat an Evesham Football League XI 5-1 in "somewhat waterlogged conditions" at the ground in King George's Way.

Mr Wilcox said: "I'd like to thank the volunteers who cleared the pitch as well as Pershore Town who allowed us to use their facilities."

The match, which raised over £1,500 for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, is now set to become an annual fixture.

Kidderminster Harriers' FA Trophy tie against Luton Town on Saturday was postponed because of a frozen pitch as was Worcester City's match against Gainsborough in the Blue Square Bet North.

Parts of the A44 and A4103 were both closed for long periods as motorists experienced some delays during the snowfall on Saturday and overnight.
