Flood warnings were issued for rivers in Herefordshire and Worcestershire after more heavy rain on Tuesday.

The Wye was affected from Hay-on-Wye to Hereford, from Hereford to Ross-on-Wye, in north Hereford and in south Hereford.

Warnings were also placed on the Teme, at Leintwardine, Walford and Stanford Bridge, with two warnings on the Avon at Wyre Piddle, Pershore and Wick.

On the Severn, Kempsey, Callow End and south Worcester were affected.

The flood gates at New Street in Upton-upon-Severn were closed as the town braced itself for rising river levels.

Jubilee Bridge in the Fladbury area and Eckington Bridge in Worcestershire were also shut.

Flood barriers near Kempsey in Worcestershire have so far protected the village, which was badly flooded when they failed in 2012

A £1.5m flood prevention system installed at the village of Kempsey in Worcestershire failed in 2012, but so far this year is "working well", the Environment Agency said.

Spokesman Chris Bainger described the situation in the two counties as a "fairly typical seasonal flood" that was not causing the agency "great concerns".

But he added: "Towards the end of the week with another band of rain on saturated ground I think we'll see further flood alerts and flood warnings."

Mr Bainger said all of its staff were working over the festive period.

Severn Trent tweeted, external it had pumps "at the ready" for any flooding in Hylton Road, which is prone to flooding in wet weather.
