Library cuts plans approved by Herefordshire Council

Plans to cut staff numbers and opening hours at libraries across Herefordshire have been approved by councillors.

The authority is trying to cut about £700,000 from its libraries budget by sharing library buildings and relying more on volunteers.

A 1.9% rise in council tax has also been approved in the plans to go before full council next month.

Some back office staff could lose their jobs from April to save £1.2m, the council said.

The Conservative-led authority needs to save £33m by 2018.

Libraries in Hereford, Leominster and Bromyard will be protected from most of the changes, Matthew Bone, BBC Hereford and Worcester political reporter said.
