A century after leaving to fight in World War One, men from the Herefordshire Regiment have been honoured again.

Over a thousand men from the regiment took part in the Battle of Suvla Bay against the Ottoman Empire, in modern day Turkey.

The Volunteer Inn, Hereford, houses a plaque and bench, near to the regiment's barracks.

A special beer has also been created to commemorate the anniversary.

The bench is one of 13 installed around the city by Hereford City Council to commemorate those who died at war. The plaque was funded by the Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum.

Col Andy Taylor, of the infantry museum, said: "Reserve soldiers of the county have been based on the Suvla Barracks site since 1860."

The Volunteer Inn has, over the generations, been the unofficial canteen of the troops, Col Taylor said, and this has continued with 10 platoons of 6th Battalion The Rifles located in the Suvla Barracks today.

The plaque will be officially unveiled on Saturday 18 July.
