Traffic was at a standstill as the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 closed on Wednesday morning.

A person has died on a stretch of motorway in Worcestershire.

West Mercia Police confirmed there had been one fatality on the M5 northbound at junction 6 on Wednesday morning.

Both the northbound and southbound carriageways have now reopened, after both directions had earlier closed at the A4538 Pershore Lane.

All lanes were fully open and delays were significantly reduced, National Highways said.

Officers and ambulances attended the scene.

Motorists had earlier been advised to avoid the area, due to congestion.

There had been queues of traffic eight miles long with 90 minutes of delays.
