Man dies and three injured in four-car Evesham crash

A man died and three other people were hurt following the first of two fatal crashes on the same stretch of road

A man has died and three people have been injured following a crash involving four cars.

It happened at the junction of Pitchers Hill and the A44 in Broadway, near Evesham, at about 20:30 BST Thursday.

A driver of one of the vehicles was confirmed dead at the scene after being freed by firefighters, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

Police said he was aged 40. His seriously injured passenger, who also had to be freed, was taken to hospital.

The driver of the second car, a man, was additionally taken to hospital with serious injuries, the ambulance service said.

The West Mercia force stated the 47-year-old was hurt as a result of an assault following the crash.

A woman driving the third car, whose injuries were described as minor, received hospital treatment.Police have arrested a man, 45, on suspicion of assault and driving under the influence of drugs. He is in police custody.

Air ambulance crews from Dorset and Wiltshire were scrambled to the scene to assist in the aftermath of the crash.

The following morning at about 05:30 BST a man died after his motorbike hit a telegraph pole along the same stretch of road.

'Incredibly sad'

West Mercia Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to a marked police vehicle being in the area at the time of the second crash.

Supt Rebecca Love said: "I can confirm that both of these very tragic collisions are being investigated by the force's specialist dedicated serious collision investigators.

"It is incredibly sad that two people have lost their lives and our thoughts are with those who have been affected and those injured."
