Volunteers will be given pellets to feed the swans

A Christmas swan-feeding event is due to take place in Worcester.

A group known as The Swan Food Project is supplying pellets, but said with rain forecast and a flood alert on the River Severn, it might have to move the distribution to a different location.

The city's deputy mayor, Mel Allcott, who is taking part in the annual event, said it was a good opportunity to promote the work of the group, which was set up in 2014.

She said swans were "part of the city".

As well as being a chance for the group to get the word out, The Big Christmas Swan Feed is important for the swans, because there is little natural food available for swans in Worcester over the winter.

The Swan Food Project said it was a not-for-profit organisation which aspires to become a charity. It gives lots of information , externalon what and how to feed swans on its website, it added.

It is entirely run by volunteers and was founded to improve the diet of swans in Worcester, to improve their environment and to help people learn about them.

With river levels high in the city, the group said it is possible that the river will be over South Quay on Thursday, making a lake at the bottom of St Andrew's Garden by Copenhagen Street car park.

It said it would provide updates if the locations of the free pellets have to move.
