Elissa Swinglehurst believes the plans will "minimise waste and increase reuse, repair and recycling"

New weekly food waste collections are expected to start later this year.

Herefordshire Council is set to receive £1.85m from the government to help start to phase in the collections from September.

Elissa Swinglehurst, cabinet member for the environment, said the plans would help to minimise waste.

Local authorities are required to bring in the collections for businesses from March 2025 and for homes from March 2026.

The government grant will help provide new kitchen caddies, larger kerbside caddies, wheeled food waste bins for commercial users and new vehicles to collect them.

There will be no immediate changes to residents' or businesses' collections for now.

The cabinet is also expected to back spending of up to £5.8m on "depot improvements, service enhancement and new receptacles", and to order the new bin lorries, ahead of the new contract.

This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
