Up to 300 posts could be lost at North Yorkshire Police as a result of the cuts outlined in the government's Spending Review, the force's chief constable has said.
Grahame Maxwell said he anticipated that the jobs of about 100 officers and 200 staff were under threat.
Mr Maxwell told BBC Radio York the force would find out the exact figures in December.
Meanwhile, the City of York Council said up to 400 jobs were at risk.
A spokeswoman said the move was necessary to reduce council spending by about £50m by 2014.
North Yorkshire County Council had earlier estimated about 50 posts were under threat.
The authority said it would also have to wait until December when they receive exact details of the local government funding settlement.
