Grimsby and Cleethorpes burials cancelled due to snow

All burials in the Grimsby and Cleethorpes area have been cancelled this week because of snow and ice.

Freezing temperatures mean the ground is too hard to dig at Scartho Road and Cleethorpes cemeteries, North East Lincolnshire Council said.

Officials said pathways and roads into the cemeteries were also "extremely hazardous".

Four full burials and six interments of cremated remains have been cancelled at the cemeteries so far.

Councillor Peter Burgess, portfolio holder for environment and the green agenda, said: "Unfortunately, the weather has meant that we have had to cancel all burials this week to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused families, but we have had to take this unavoidable decision given the extreme weather conditions and the difficulties this has caused."

The council said that 24 cremations scheduled for this week would go ahead as planned.
